This paper reports the strategies of the genetic improvement program carried out by EMBRAPA, for the Psosopis species. The results obtained with the introduction of species from different ecological zones in the world are presented, as well as the tecnhiques of asexual propagation to establish a clonal seed orchard. Sixteen species of Prosopis from several provenances were introduced from Peru, Argentina, Chile, Senegal, Pakistan, Mexico, Cape Verde, Paragyay, Honduras and United States of America, from 1984 to 1994. The best species established in term of survival and growth were P. juliflora, P. pallida, P. velutina, P. glandulosa, P. cineraria and P. affinis. Aspects of wood and fodder production and quality of some Prosopis species are also presented. |

The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is the species endemic to European coasts, both Atlantic and Mediterranean. It has been exploited since Roman times, but its aquaculture production decreased from around 20000 tons in the 1950's to 1500 tons today because of two successive diseases due to the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. Since 1985, Ifremer has been undertaking a breeding program to produce families of oysters tolerant to Bonamia. In this context, a further step would be to identify QTLs for resistance to this parasite. Therefore, as a first step a genetic map is now being built. The establishment of a genetic linkage map will provide a foundation for the mapping of QTLs, with the ultimate objective to implement... |

Summer mortality associated with juveniles of the oyster Crassostrea gigas is the result of a complex interaction between the host, pathogens and environment. Divergent selection based on summer survival have been applied to produce families with resistant and susceptible progeny. Here, we describe the use of suppression subtractive hybridization to generate 150 clones that were differentially regulated between resistant and susceptible F2 progeny. The nucleotide sequence of these 150 clones was determined. Among the 25 unique sequences that matched with the products of known genes, those putatively implicated in energy generation (12%) and immune function (16%), systems suspected to be implicated in summer mortality, were extended and analyzed by real... |

Three successive generations were produced between 2001 and 2003 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for this trait in juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas. For each generation, two groups were selected for their high ("R" for resistant) and low ("S" for susceptible) survival. Significant differences of mortality were observed during the first year in Rivière d'Auray (RA) (Brittany-France). However, low and similar mortality were observed for both groups, with no significant difference between groups in the first and second generation in this site, where the first summer is the critical sensitive period with a clear age effect. In Baie des Veys (BDV) (Normandie-France), where mortalities usually mainly affect adults, mortality between... |

Rearing of Crassostrea gigas is the most economically important aquaculture activity in France. Bacteria belonging to Vibrio genus constitute one of the most abundant bacterial group in marine ecosystems. Two Vibrio species, V. splendidus and V. aestuarianus, were associated with many cases of mortality events in reared C. gigas spat and juvenile oysters, commonly during summer. This summer mortality syndrome has been extensively documented as the result of complex interactions between pathogens, host and environmental conditions. This work aims to study the Vibrio-host interactions and their modulations according to the virulence of pathogens and the genetic and/or physiological parameters of the host. These factors will be characterized by in vitro and... |
